How it works

Three steps, then a clear answer.

1. Calibrate your screen
Hold any bank card against the screen and match its size, so every letter and grid is drawn at real-world size.
2. Take the tests
Answer by tapping, with the arrow keys, or out loud from across the room. Each test explains your result right away.
3. Talk to a doctor
Get a summary of everything you checked to print or save, plus clear advice on whether to book an exam.

The science, briefly

Each test is based on a method eye doctors use, adapted carefully for a screen.

Vision test (20/20). Tumbling-E letters sized so the 20/20 line spans 5 minutes of arc at your distance, from 20/200 to 20/10, one eye at a time.

Contrast sensitivity test. Letters halving in contrast at each step, in the spirit of the Pelli-Robson chart.

Astigmatism test. A clock-dial chart of evenly weighted lines. With astigmatism, one direction looks darker.

Amsler grid test. A 10 cm Amsler grid with 5 mm squares, used by eye doctors to check the macula.

Color blind test. Plates generated from a model of the eye's cones (Viénot, Brettel & Mollon, 1999), each invisible to one type of color blindness.

Reading vision test. Standard N-point print sizes read at 40 cm, combined with your age.

Questions

Still unsure? Ask an optometrist. They'll be glad you checked.

Can I test my eyes online for free?

Yes. SightGrade is free with no sign-up. It screens your sharpness (visual acuity), contrast sensitivity, color vision, astigmatism, central vision and reading vision in about 5 minutes.

Does this replace an eye exam?

No. SightGrade can flag common problems like blurry vision, astigmatism or color blindness, but it can't look inside your eye. Conditions such as glaucoma often have no early symptoms and need a professional exam. Get one every 1–2 years, or every year if you're over 60, have diabetes, or have glaucoma in your family.

How accurate is it?

With a careful screen calibration and the right distance, the sharpness test is close to a printed eye chart. Results still depend on your screen, lighting and answers, so treat them as a good indication, not a measurement for glasses.

Should I wear my glasses or contacts?

Yes, wear whatever you normally use at that distance. That way the test shows how you see day to day.

Why do I need a bank card?

Screens vary in size, so the site can't know how big a pixel is. Any standard card is exactly 85.6 mm wide, which lets SightGrade draw letters at their true size. You can also use a ruler or enter your screen size.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Calibrate your phone screen with a card first. For the distance sharpness test a laptop or larger screen is easier, because you stand a few meters away.

Do you store my results?

No. There are no accounts and nothing is uploaded. Your results exist only in this browser tab and disappear when you close it. Print or save your summary as a PDF if you want to bring it to your doctor.
